The Game Lore so far!

Year?
According to the region of space you are currently in, the year is 4521 After Federation.
Galaxy
The Whirlpool, a colossal galaxy that is roughly 550,300 light years across. It’s also currently blending with a dwarf galaxy known as the Dwarf.

There are many governments, empires, domains and general regions of the galaxy.

The Noanga is currently travelling through Federation Space, a section of space that is roughly 10,000 light years across and home to hundreds of spacefaring species.

While there are ‘humans’ -terrans- within the Whirlpool, they are almost extinct and are blacklisted amongst most areas of space - along with 99% of mechanical lifeforms, and other species, such as cervitaur and illithids. Terrans did not, and continue not to make, good impressions on alien species, and terrans have become feared as Warbringers.

That said, there are small enclaves of humans under heavy guard by the fae.

Unfortunately, all mechanical life is often associated with the negative, and given that most mechanical life can live for millions of years, the Whirlpool has learned to fear them and tend to shoot first, ask questions later. Those who exist keep their head down, or join with other species or groups that have been outlawed.

Governments within The Whirlpool
This is not an exhaustive list, but a list of those relevant to characters.
The Federation of Twelve
(Democracy; Australian-style system)

The area of space the Noanga is travelling through!

It has a Federation Wide space internet known as Fed-Net, but currently the Noanga's Wi-fi systems are unable to hook up to it. This can probably be fixed!

The two most prominent Autonomous regions within Federation Space are as follows:
  • The Bootes Domain. A collection of 15 planet systems located in Federation Space.
    • Dictatorship by a single Feliod family known as the Bootes.
    • The current Overlord is the Hikikomori Oskar Bootes.
    • The Domain pays taxes and the people generally have a good life. Think Doctor Doom style in that the Bootes are seen as benevolent dictators to the people.
  • The l'Oiseau Commune. Located in Federation Space.
    • Communist Commune that doesn't like outsiders much. Pays tribute instead of taxes.

The Tribunal of Twelve
Elected for life, these figures tend to be from the longer-lived species, though not always.
  • Renoi Sunstride - They/Them. A 15ft tall cattaur species known as Lamia. They are a lion, to be exact, and they have a favourite, much younger Cousin named Yvelri, who is a touch clueless. Renoi is in overall charge of the Federation Space Fleets.
  • Lord Stans of the Rocky Corals of Hyra - He/It. Telepathic jellyfish species known as ‘Jelly-kin’; he is a Lions Mane to be exact. 40ft tall.
  • Baadok Son - He/Him. Hyena-like species. Aardwolf to be exact. The youngest and newest member of the Tribunal. His wife, Giina, is the real power behind him. Practitioner of the obscure art of Chi. Has several children.
  • Prince Xylar Challane - He/Him. Serpent-like species known as Nathair. Roughly 10ft in height. Has a wife and 6 children whom he adores.
  • Thii’os Escheri - He/Him. Phage-kin, a species based on bacteriophages/virophages. He has a Really Cool Gun and *really* likes neon colours. He's around 500 years old - middle age for his species - and the oldest of the Tribunal. He's about 15ft tall.
  • O-phos ??? - Geode-based species. Roughly 25ft tall.
  • Vorlag ??? - Member of an Insect-based species. Roughly 20ft tall.
  • R'ylla ??? - an Avianiod species that is Cassowary-based.
  • Elara of the Verdant - She/her. Hails from a plant-like species.
  • Lady Callidora - She/her. A Literal dragon. Think D&D style blue dragon. 12ft at the shoulder.
  • Lord Anjra - He/him; a powerful fae, it's whispered he killed to gain his seat on the Tribunal. (Based on the pooka)
  • Spaw of the Greater Golden Circle - One of the Mycelia, it's telepathic voice skews towards male.

The Faerie (galaxy wide)
  • Ruled by the 50 Faerie Queens, from which come the Council of 15 High Queens.
  • They do not fall into Summer/Winter/Spring/Autumn courts.
  • There is so much politicking amongst the fae. So Much. Alliances are made or broken on whims.
  • It’s said it’s better to be invisible to the fae than to have one’s attention.
  • High Queen Meab of the Dark Elves is infamous for hosting The Grand Wild Hunt every ten years - though the Hunt is more Grand Spectacle for the hosting region than anything truly harrowing.
They are a fascinating and powerful set of species that operate within a broad, complex, and often dangerous society ruled by the 16 High Queens, chosen from the 50 Queens. They have the most treaties with the rest of the galaxy, who seek to plug as many loopholes as possible. Yet it's never enough; the fae have a reputation for trickery. They are not to be trifled with, and it's said that even when they lose, the fae still win.

Broadly speaking, the fae have their own rules and laws that change depending on species involved, which they consider as superseding everything else. However, as long as they do not flaunt their magics or whatever is considered to be illegal, the rest of the Galaxy will turn a blind eye to it. And, as long as the Grand Wild Hunt happens every ten years, what they get up to within their own spaces tends to be ignored unless it spills over.

It never spills over; the fae on a whole ensure it does not.

That said, everyone knows that if the fae really wanted to be a threat, they would be. They are, after all, a force to be reckoned with. Anyone dealing with them must be cautious and aware of their customs and weaknesses.

All faere/fae/fairy species have an OOC basis within Earth's fae lore (specifically the Irish versions where possible), but are not 1-to-1 with it. Pixies, for example, look like this and are anywhere between 2' to 4' tall fully grown, while Redcaps are goblinoid giants easily 35' tall brutes with a penchant for violence and spilling blood, though they are NOT known for blood magic of any kind.

All fae are loyal to the Fairy Queens.

The Collective of the Hive
  • Bees! Yes, really. The main species within the Collective is a bee-like species.
  • It can be said the Collective is famous for two main things: Space hippies and Space Weed.
  • Bee-majority Worlds are referred to as Hives.
  • Flerken come from this region of space and seen as cute pets, not the terrors the rest of the galaxy know them as.

The Solstar Empire
  • Ruled by the Three Emperors.
  • Dire Wraiths hail from here.
  • Triceratons hail from here.

The Merchant’s Commonwealth
  • An area of space ruled by merchant guilds. Considered a tax haven for the Rich of the Whirlpool.
  • The ruling guilds have little sway outside their Commonwealth.

The Warren
  • The Mycelia, a hivemind fungi/slime species, hail from here.
  • Not much is know about them outside the following -
  • They use 'it' as pronoun, and are organised into 'Circles'.
  • They're extremely long-lived - one of the longest-lived - and it's unknown if they can die, as no deaths from old age have been recorded.
  • They are one of a few species that tend to be seen around Important, Rich, or Interesting people, and they seem to be a type of loose, somewhat hierarchical hive mind.

Species within The Whirlpool
Overview
Below is a list of species found within the Whirlpool, though this is by no means an exhaustive list as there are at least a hundred of thousand space-faring species alone. This list is always being updated, so check back now and again.

Non-Fae Species
Nathair
Visual: Serpent-people (art by Fenix)
Serpentiods that stand roughly 10ft tall and about 25ft long when fully grown, they're one of the founding members of the Federation. They're not the only serpent-species in the Federation, but they are the most known. They dislike Terrans and will be very quick to report any suspected Terrans to the authorities. Despite being skilled with magic, they rely on magical items, as magic isn't something that comes naturally to them as it does other species.

Chiropsan
Visual: A humaniod bat-like species; cannot fly.
One of two well known bat-derived species. Based off flying foxes. Some can use magic, most can't.

Lamia
Visual: Art to come. Basically 'cattaurs'.
Split into various races of cats, Lamia are Tribunal member Renoi's species. The largest are ligers who stand roughly 17ft tall, with the smallest lamia standing about 9ft tall. Silver-pelted lamia are extremely rare, with most of them answering directly to Renoi or the lamia's planetary government. Some do not, but they tend not to live long.

Maanhaar
Visual: Art to Come. Aardwolf anthros to be exact.
The most famous of the various hyena-kin species. Very Matriarchal. Most famous member is Tribune Baadok Son.

Dragons
Visuals: D&D dragons, basically.
They come in a multitude of colours and stand anywhere from 12ft to 20ft at the shoulder, depending on colour, age and gender. They’re protective of their own kids, and it’s whispered the Dragons uplifted the species known as drakeborn as no-one’s actually sure where they came from. One of the founding members of the Federation, and live to about 1000 years old.

Drakeborn
Visuals: D&D dragonborn, basically.
They come in a multitude of colours to match the dragons. They lack wings, but have a tail, and stand between 8’5 and 10 feet depending on colour, age and gender. They’re not protective of their own kids though, and it’s whispered the drakes uplifted the species as no-one’s actually sure where they came from. The most (in)famous of the species is the red dragonborn known only as ‘the Krivlord’, who’s treated as both a hero and a boogeyman. They have a life space close to 200 years.

Miths
Visuals: Four examples (art from Flight Rising)
These moth-like creatures are nether insect nor mammal, but a mix of both. They love power armour, and are known for their metal-working and mining skills. They're roughly human-sized, but when in full power armour, they stand about 9ft tall.

Purinina
Visuals: Basically, Tassie Devil-like people.
Standing around 13ft, these are marsupials with a pouch. They look cute, but are actually vicious creatures if provoked. When they open their mouths to speak, it swiftly becomes clear why they have the nickname ‘devils’.

Menuah
Visuals: Roofolk.
Based off the short-faced kangaroo. These guys stand anywhere from about 12ft to 25ft tall for a male. They are perfectly capable of balancing on that tail, and despite looks, most are more muscle than not.

Tardi-kin
Visual: Here. (art by Fenix)
Tardigrades; a cute, eight-limbed species who stand about 16ft tall when not standing in their hind legs. One of the oldest species of the Whirlpool and or amongst the likes of turtleiods and dragons in terms of lifespan, depending on who’s asked (both are true). Most work in security, the loading docks of space stations due to their ability to survive extreme conditions that’d kill a cockroach, or in bio-hazards. They’re friendly and indestructible or near enough to it.

They also seem to be the species that introduced sign language to the Whirlpool at large, as they don’t exactly have voice boxes, but it doesn't stop them from getting points across and understood, or hearing you.

Jelly-kin
Visual: Immortal, Box Jelly, Lions Mane (art by Fenix)
The term for the strictly telepathic jellyfish species in the Federation, their height varies from 10ft tall to a massive 40ft tall, with feeding tendrils reaching up to double that in length when not curled up for politeness. They also possess what is known as a Core, that is, their soul made manifest into something extremely hardy.

Phage-kin
Visual: A WIP one. (art by Fenix)
A species based on bacteriophages/virophages, they're organically geometric in nature. They have four arms, six legs and heads in the shapes of d20, d12, d10 and d8s. They're friendly enough, and most like neon colours. They stand at about 15ft, and live around 1000 or so years. One of the founding species of the Federation.

Avian (Cassowary)
Visual: Cassowary person
One of many avian species, this one is based on the cassowary. Can't fly. Nice people, just don't get them angry.

Mycelia
Visual: Ttrpg fungifolk/Myconiods. They have a base mushroom or two (or mushroom and slime).
Organised into 'Circles', Mycelia use 'it' as pronouns, but they can/will conform to whatever others use for them. They're extremely long-lived and it's unknown if they can die, as no deaths from old age have been recorded. They are one of a few species that tend to be seen around Important, Rich, or Interesting people for various reasons. That said, if they pick a person to bond to, they're loyal to that person above all else, even the Circle they came from.

Bee-kin
Visual: Bee furry. Visuals depend on species.
The collective term for the many, many species of Bees in the Whirlpool. They're generally friends, and are most known to be space hippies and space weed dealers.

Triceratons
Visual: A ceratopsian based species.
A triceratops species that stands 15 to 18 foot in height. If you see one in the Federation, it's probably a bounty hunter.

Archelon
Visual: Mutant Turtles!
Human sized to 8ft tall. Think like the TMNT kind of turtles.

Space Turtles
Visual: Think actual turtles. In space.
Said to contain massive cities on their backs, no one knows much about the species at this point, only that they exist.

Testudan
Visual: Tortoise/turtle humaniod species.
They stand anywhere from 20ft to 35ft tall when grown. They're one of the longest lived species in the Federation, and are said to be the wisest.

Aurochs
Visual: Minotaurs!
Carnivorous bovines who stand 8ft tall when fully grown, it's said they've uplifted quite a few species then left them to fend for themselves.

Griffon-kin
Visual: Art to Come.
While they resemble some species of raptor birdfolk, they have tuffed lion-like ears, feathered lion tail, and tiny wings that do not allow them to fly. They stand anywhere from 10ft to 15ft tall.

Aruusan
Visual: Dogtaurs
Based on various breeds of dog, they stand anywhere between 10ft tall and 17ft, with most averaging at about 14ft tall. They have a hatred of Terrans, considering they were once a 'project species' used without thought.

Inufolk
Visual: Various dog breeds.
Your dog furries. roughly human-sized to 12ft. As a species, they are very loyal to the point they're on the edge of being blacklisted as a whole, purely because they keep helping blacklisted species such as Terrans. They are very good people, though.

Neko-kin
Visual: Your cat furries.
Based on the various breeds of cat, they stand roughly 7ft to 15ft tall. The most famous one is the Overlord of the Bootes Domain, Oskar Bootes.

Tressym
Visual: Here. (art by Baldur's Gate 3)
A magical beast resembling a small winged cat the size of an earth cat, the species in general are known to be traders and can often be found operating in larger space malls. They can speak and are really good at magic.

Lyseran
Visual: Various dog breeds with feathered wings.
The dog version of a Tressym.

Eponans
Visual: Art to come.
A magical girl species of unicorns that can change from unicorns to humanoid and back. Despite claims otherwise, it's rare their healing magic is the primary kind they use. Most of them have offensively based magic and are not afraid to use it.

Fae Species

Faere-kin is a very broad term encompassing various species across the Whirlpool. Many think they can trace a common origin to a mythical world known as Noghoige. The fae have visited and influenced thousands of planets all over the galaxy for millions of years.

Drow
Visual: D&D Drow
An egalitarian society, Drow tend to stronly dislike being refered to as dark elves. They have a dislike of Dark Elves to the point of bloodshed. They are ruled by High Queen Titania and her consort, Lord Oberon.

Dark Elves
Visual: Paper-white skin and black hair, pointed ears.
A strictly matriarchal society ruled by High Queen Maeb the XVII. They dislike Drow to the point of Bloodshed.

They are known for their Public Wild hunts, and the Grand Wild Hunt, though there are whispers they, like all fae, hold Hunts only for the Fae...

Harpies
Visual: Three ladies and a male. (art from Flight Rising)
Avianoids of some kind, females top out at roughly 12ft, though average more towards 10ft tall. Highly skilled with magic and claws, they're very fast and agile in the air. For every thirty women, there is one heavily guarded male. They have a beef with Kenku, another avianoid species, for some reason, and get along with Sirens, a similar-ish species.

The women of the species know luring magic.

Ruled by Queen Jan. Princess Vidia is her heiress.

Pixies
Visual: The colours of the seasons, always have orange eyes.
3ft tall at most and easily the most magically powerful of all Whirlpool species, adult pixies tend towards malevolence and cruelty in almost all dealings.

Currently Ruled by the acting Regent, Lord Omehl, who took the throne after the death of the last Pixie Queen and her heirs an freak accident. Omehl assures everyone she is always ready to step down should the Pixie Queen be found to have been reborn.

So far the Queen has no been found, something that worries the Pixie population, but they have faith she will return to take her rightful place.

Blacklisted Species
99% of Mechanical Life
Visual: various!
In general, due to past wars that have lasted millions of years, and other factors, up to and including tyrannical empires, mechanical life isn't something the Federation takes kindly to, especially if they get into space.

Terrans
Visual: Humans.
Native to the now dead world Terra, terrans burst onto the scene some 3500 years ago and made some VERY bad impressions, and those who do not live within protected fae enclaves continue to make Bad Impressions wherever they go and continue to drive the species towards extinction. It's whispered that terrans are very, very good at killing things and only know how to make war.

Cervitaur
Visual: Deer-taurs.
War Crimes McGee. Known for their scorched earth tactics that include wiping out whole solar systems.

Equutaur
